It seems like only yesterday that we moved to Orlando from Kansas City but it’s been seven years. Before we moved here we thought “Oh, once we live in Florida we’ll go to the beach all the time!” We’ve gone to the beach three times in those seven years, not counting many more times to the coast to get on a cruise ship and sail away. It was high time to see what Florida hotels were all about and The Shores in Daytona Beach looked like a good one to try. As it turned out, The Shores might not have been the best choice; it was just too good.
We had been on a trip to Italy the month before which pretty much burned us out of travel for a while. It was fun but it was work too. I write about cruise vacations and had been invited along on the inaugural voyage of Carnival Cruise Lines’s new ship, the Carnival Magic. It was one of those “you have to do this once-in-a-lifetime” things so wife Lisa came along too. It occurred to me once we returned that while we travel a lot, we have not been on a nice, relaxing getaway in years. It was time for one of those.

So off to Google I went, searching for hotels on the beach with room service and nice accommodations. The Shores just kept coming up, begging me to click and learn. It looked like they had everything we needed so off we went for a weekend stay in one of their beachfront Lanai rooms.
In short: It was perfect.
Just a quick 45 minute drive from our home north of Orlando, we arrived about 2:00 and were greeted by Joey, one of the valets who helped us to our room and took care of our car for the weekend. We would not need it. The plan was to sit, relax and stare at the ocean for two days enjoying room service and doing pretty much nothing.
We did indeed do nothing. Glorious nothing for two days.
Snappy quick Internet access was nice to have but of no interest. Many recreation, spa, dining and entertainment options were available too. We didn’t do any of those either.
Instead we spent most of the time on our oceanfront lanai, occasionally taking a walk on the beach, ordering really good room service and/or drinking a variety of concoctions available at the close-by Tiki Bar steps from our room.
We’ll for sure return to The Shores one day, especially if we’re in the mood to do absolutely nothing but relax.
