30 Days & 30 Ways to Enjoy Florida; Day 26, Fishing, sport fishing, fresh water fishing, sharking, fish
If you didn’t know, fishing is huge in Florida. So much so, our governor has just helped Visit Florida – the state’s tourism branch – launch the new “Florida Fishing Capital of the World” website. Fresh water, sport, deep sea, charters, and well, eating fish is all such a draw that a 2006 National Survey (PDF) shows that state and local taxes generated by sport fishing brought in $440 million. That same report shows that Saltwater fishing is a $5.1 billion industry providing 51,588 jobs.
That’s some serious stuff.
Doubt the numbers? How about all the charters out there? The fishing magazines. The tournaments. The pro fishers.
Then there’s the Shark Attack reports. Hey, sharks are in our waters – also known as their home – so people are going to meet up with sharks – just be smart out there folks. The shark is an amazing creature… can’t wait to swim with a Whale Shark…
Ok, back to the fishing.
Florida is tailor made for fishing, what with so much water – everywhere. All that sun. The places with the fish.
Did you know Florida has hosted presidents, novelists and other celebrity types to enjoy its amazing fishing? Maybe you’ve heard of a guy named Hemingway? He loved fishing in Florida…
So the next time you get the urge to toss a line, spend some time in the sun, challenge yourself to the fight, maybe catch tonight’s dinner yourself… check out Florida… where water, sun, fun and fish all come together for a perfect getaway…
Please note: the BP disaster has touched our Gulf in a dramatic way. The state of Florida, the fishermen and women, the charter operators and everyone in Florida who is involved in tourism and who love our Gulf keep your safety and the safety of the catch in mind. Cameras, testing, reporting and daily updates will show you that fishing, boating, swimming and enjoying the Gulf is still fine – and we invite you to come see for yourself… Florida’s Gulf is open for business.
