Give Me 5; Places I love in the Florida Keys

Diving and water sports are just some of the exciting and beautiful ways to spend time in the Florida Keys. Photo courtesy of The Florida Keys & Key West.

It’s been a while and we’re hoping to go back this year – Assistant Laura has never been to the Florida Keys – but these were 5 of my favorites on my last visit, and will likely be included in any future ones.

If you’re considering a Florida Keys & Key West visit, they’d be worthy your consideration as well…

Dolphin Research Center. The whole reason for my first visit was a week at DRC for DolphinLab. This exciting and immersive week of study lets dolphin lovers learn about this favorite mammal, have up-close encounters, including feeding and training, and let’s you do it all in the beauty of the Keys.

Add in their commitment to helping dolphin, pinniped and manatee, their passion for protecting our waters, and that the staff is really very nice and you’ve got a great place to visit. Open to tours, have encounters or spend a week, DRC should be on your must-do list of Florida Keys stops.

Beaches. The Keys are all islands reaching for the horizon like an octopus reaching for a meal. Each one is unique, yet the same. Each one is beautiful, mysterious, mesmerizing. Each one is surrounded by water. Lots of water. With Sand = a beach.

Christ of the Abyss. Wanna see a really cool statue in a really unique spot? Forget Europe, your state’s capitol or Hollywood – check out Christ of the Abyss… of course, you gotta get into the water to see it (aside from photos). This third statue from the original mold lies beneath the waters of John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park.

Key Deer. Wanna see tiny deer? You’ll find them in the Florida Keys – if you’re looking carefully (and driving carefully). Endangered, it was almost extinct as it was hunted for food, but protection and care have brought numbers back. Sadly, being struck by cars remains it’s chief threat.

7-Mile Bridge. Who wouldn’t want to cross a 7-mile long bridge reaching across the blue & emerald waters – a vista that goes on as far as the eye can see… ok, well, if you’re scared of such things you wouldn’t, but if not… it is amazing! I’m a little scared on bridges, but 7 – Mile is a joy for traveling… amazing, what a way to view the Keys…
