China Wok; Winter Garden offers great Chinese with China Wok
Frankly we don’t go into Winter Garden, Florida much. On this day we’d decided to explore the area having found a great mall along tollway 429 and wanting to discover what lie between our area & Mount Dora – a place we head often. Leaving the mall area we took a “back-road” (Winter Garden-Vineland) and stumbled upon a great discovery: China Wok.
Assistant Laura & I both enjoy good Chinese food, and while I admit fully to be a Chinese food snob, my searching often comes up wanting, yet I continue to try. On this day, I wouldn’t be disappointed.
Over the years we’ve discovered one little trick that we keep in our back pockets: go where the police go.
Driving by the small strip mall off to the side and almost missing it, we spotted the China Wok sign, then the cop’s car. We doubled back through the parking lot and came upon a “small hole in the wall-kind of place” – don’t get me wrong, it’s perfectly clean, but small and feels out-of-the-way. This little strip mall could easily go the way of VHS & stagecoaches if things don’t turn around for it, but I’d hope that if it did, China Wok would simply relocate in this quickly changing area.
A bright and light place, the sweet young woman behind the counter came from the back quickly to take our order, and when we hadn’t noticed that time had moved beyond their “Lunch is served until 3:00pm” cut off by about 20 minutes, she said she’d honor it without hesitation.
For Assistant Laura the Orange Chicken and me the Sweet & Sour Pork were prepared fresh and piping hot. We decided to stay in and enjoy the little store – plus its a decent drive back home and eating in the car would be crazy.
The police officer smiled and agreed with my observation – always eat where they eat – and it quickly became clear he is a regular.
The menu here is large, with plenty of options including 27 lunch items at the very reasonable $5.25 for any other them. Lunch includes Pork Fried Rice & soda, plus an egg roll – extra $.00 with beef or shrimp Fried Rice.
The portions were hearty and filling, even requiring us to take some home.
We both bit in quickly, my mouth coming up hot & tongue a tiny bit singed, but Laura kept going and soon we both enjoyed immensely our meals. As always we shared a portion and each loved the others as well.
The ingredients are fresh tasting, the Fried Rice as perfectly executed as I’ve ever tasted, and for both of us, the excitement of really good egg rolls – always a major test. Just looking again at the photos, my mouth waters from the memory and I’m itching to go back.
Our biggest complaint: we don’t live closer!
China Wok is a worthy drive and we will return and in the mean time, if you’re in or near Winter Garden, Florida and enjoy really good Chinese, make a point to visit China Wok.
